  • Introduction and discussion: Juan González

As a material, film is constantly changing. In archives, these changes are documented via condition reports. Sometimes the encounter between the film print and the person inspecting it can feel like a revelation. In this series, filmmaker Juan González would like to share his personal moments of discovery experienced during his time inspecting film prints at Arsenal.
The industries of cinema, winter sports and aluminum production emerged simultaneously at the end of the 19th century. The image of skiers gliding down the slopes in the early 21st century offers a unique perspective to understand how these fields intersect.
In SCHUSS! (2005) by Nicolas Rey, a French ski resort becomes the setting for an exploration of leisure, industry and empire. At the Berlinale Forum 2006, Rey asked: "How can one make films are tailored to people, films that are patient, listen and show something - without robbing the world of complexity?" SCHUSS! offers an approach for those who want to answer this question. (Juan González)
